Lyness, on the island of Hoy, was a key naval base during the first and second world wars. Scapa Flow was used as the naval base for the British Navy and in 1918 was a place of internment and the famous subsequent scuppering of 74 ships of the German High Seas fleet. Remnants of this history are scattered across Orkney and are, on the whole, simply respected and untouched. These old pier supports on a remote Scottish island, surrounded by broken oil supply pipes and rusted remains are a stark reminder of times when Scapa Flow was a place of huge strategic importance across the globe.
